Running in the heat

Hi Christy - also in Dallas here. The problem (as you well know) is that it stays hot late into the summer evenings.  If you can, try to get out in the morning before the sun gets too high - so that you're not in the direct sun as much. You'll see people out running the lake at 4am to avoid the sun and heat (it is a little scary then).  6am is a little more reasonable, but if you're doing a 2-3-4 hour long run, you're still in the sun quite a bit. The tips here are good - you definitely need to slow down, carry water to drink and pour on your head when you get hot, don't be afraid to take more walk breaks, and stop if you don't feel good for any reason (dizzy, nauseous, etc).  Try to wear all light colored dry-fit (no cotton), and as someone else mentioned, no hat unless it has lots of ventilation.
