Ok, so maybe we should offer up some more specific ideas... the trick of course, is to not overwhelm the original poster. Some things to consider might be:
- increasing long run distance, i.e. if you can run 3.1 miles, how about 6 miles? or 12?
- increasing speed for a specific distance, as in can I run those 3 miles 30 seconds faster?
- increasing distance per week.
We can't ignore the fact that a lot of us run to:
- manage weight,
- manage cardio-vascular health (as in posting "x" minutes of aerobic activity per day),
On the other hand, running gives us the opportunity for:
- time alone (or the corallary: time with a group),
- participation in a running event, i.e. a bucket list thing: run a HM or a full marathon,
And finally:
- some people run for the shear joy of running, simply because if feels natural to them to be doing it and it gives them a simple pleasure...
and so on. It turns out that a runners' goals are a very individual thing that shift and change throughout.
My 2 cents...
